Follow-ups
How to plan the next step with a contact or a company and set a due date, where to find your follow-ups and what happens with a meeting booked by a caller.
What it is for
A follow-up is the next step you have planned with a contact or a company, with a text and a due date. The Follow-ups section shows all your follow-ups in one place, sorted by due date.
How to
In the Follow-ups section:
- Click + next to the heading (New follow-up).
- Choose what the follow-up is for: Contact, Company or No contact. For a contact or a company, start typing the name and pick it from the list.
- Write what the next step is and choose the Due date. The due date is optional.
- Click Save.
In the contact detail:
- In the Relationship section, on the Follow-up row, click Add follow-up.
- Write the next step, choose the due date and click Save.
You edit a follow-up with the pencil Edit follow-up. When it is done, remove it with the Clear button. You can also set a follow-up in the side panel on LinkedIn.
Good to know
- A follow-up belongs to you, not to the contact. Several members can each have their own follow-up on one contact. You see your colleagues' follow-ups in the detail below your own, read only.
- You can add a follow-up to any contact you can see, including a colleague's contact.
- You have at most one follow-up per person. The text has at most 500 characters.
- Status: Overdue or Today. Follow-ups without a due date are at the end.
- The number next to Follow-ups in the left menu shows your follow-ups due today or earlier.
- When a relationship is closed, the follow-ups on the contact disappear. Closing an action plan does not remove them.
- When you already have a follow-up on the chosen contact or company, the window tells you and saving replaces it.
- A follow-up you are writing in the contact detail is saved as you go and opens again when you return to the contact.
- Email reminders are turned on in My settings, tab Reminders: on the due date, or a Monday summary for the whole week. Both also include your tasks with a due date.
Meeting booked by a caller
When a caller books a meeting for you, a follow-up with the Meeting label and a due date appears. The Prep button opens the meeting preparation. After the due date the app asks Did the meeting take place?: Took place, Did not take place or Rescheduled with a new due date.
Company follow-up
Useful when you want to get in touch with a company but do not know whom yet (for example after a trade fair). In the list it has the Company label and clicking it opens the company detail. There you find it in the Follow-ups section, where you also edit or clear it. Your colleagues' follow-ups on the company are below yours, read only. Company follow-ups come in email reminders like the others. They do not count in team overviews, company coverage or relationship cadence.
No contact
The No contact option saves the entry as a task for you with a due date. You find it in Tasks.
By cadence
Below the follow-ups is the By cadence section with your relationships you have not been in touch with for a long time according to their cadence. You postpone them with a follow-up that has a due date.
Frequently asked questions
A colleague wants to give me a task. Is that possible?
Everyone records their own follow-ups. Assign your colleague a task in the contact detail, section Tasks, or from a message with Turn into a task. Tasks with a due date come in the reminders together with follow-ups.
Why did a follow-up disappear?
The relationship with the contact was closed, or you cleared the follow-up.
A contact is missing from the new follow-up list. Why?
The list shows only contacts you can see and are allowed to write to. A contact whose relationships are all closed is not in it.
