Relationship, person and company

Why Opener owns the relationship with a person, not the person, and why a company is only a detail of a person.

What it is for

Opener is built on three terms: person, relationship and company. Once you tell them apart, it is easy to understand why you see what you see and who is responsible for what.

How to

Person

A person is one shared record for the whole space: name, position, salutation, location, LinkedIn profile, emails and phone numbers. Each person is in the space only once. A person is identified mainly by their LinkedIn profile. Any member with write access who notices an error can correct the details (Edit contact details).

Relationship

A relationship is your work with a person: steps, phases, notes, follow-up, documents, deals. A relationship always has one owner. Several team members can have a relationship with the same person, each their own. In the contact detail, in the Relationship section, you then see the Also worked by line with colleagues who have their own relationship with the same person.

A relationship is created when you take a person with the side panel on LinkedIn, pick them up from New contacts, import them or send them an email with Opener's address in copy.

Company

A company is a detail of a person, not a separate target of work. A person has one main company, which you see in their detail and in the Companies list. The whole space sees companies. Company coverage shows how well the team knows a company. When you want to get in touch with a company and do not know whom yet, add a follow-up to it. It belongs to you and does not count towards coverage.

Good to know

  • Work is assigned and divided by people, not by companies. Two colleagues can reach out to different people from the same company.
  • Closing a relationship does not remove the person from the space. Their details and history remain, the relationship is just no longer among the active ones.
  • When the same person appears twice, they are merged as a duplicate. Nothing is merged automatically.

Frequently asked questions

A colleague is already working with this person. Do I have to take them as well?

No. The whole team sees the contact, so you can record your step, note and follow-up in it. Each entry will show that it is yours.

Why does the person have a different company than on LinkedIn?

The company is filled in with the first entry. If the person has changed jobs, edit the company in the contact details.
